John Lennon, Working Class Hero

Quando muito do legado de John Lennon a solo fica resumido na memória radiofónica a Imagine (cançãozinha sobrevalorizada) e Woman (pífia foleirice de um álbum póstumo santificado pelo assassínio do seu autor), está na hora de recuperar alguns dos momentos mais agitados, interventivos e singulares dessa figura complexa e contraditória que foi John Winston (mais tarde Ono) Lennon.
E Working Class Hero é um desses objectos. Incluído no álbum de estreia oficial a solo (John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, de 1970), é uma prova de que a simplicidade genial é extremamente efectiva. Apenas  a voz de Lennon e ele a tocar a sua guitarra acústica. Poucos acordes, um mantra repetitivo, e uma linha que define toda a canção: "a working class hero is something to be".
Lennon estava em plena fase revolucionária, e provinha de famílias emigrantes irlandesas pobres, se bem que ele próprio nunca tenha feito um dia de trabalho operário, ao contrário, por exemplo, de Paul McCartney. Mas sabia do que falava, e o desprezo contido nesta canção de protesto contra as desigualdades de classes na Velha Albion não pode deixar de fazer eco em quem, neste século XXI, vê o abismo de riqueza entre pobres e ricos aumentar obscenamente.
